How we verify
Amazon does not require sellers to declare where a product was made, and offers no way to filter by it. So we check by hand, we show our sources, and we tell you plainly when we have not checked.
The four marks
Each mark carries two facts, not one. The bar shows how much of the product is actually domestic. The line beneath shows whether we verified it, and when.
- Made in USA
- Meets the FTC standard: all or virtually all of this product is of US origin.
- Assembled in USA
- Final assembly happens in the US, using some imported components.
- US Company, Imported
- An American-owned company manufacturing overseas. Listed for transparency, not endorsement.
- Brand-Claimed, Unverified
- The brand says this is made in the USA. We have not independently verified that claim.
What a verification involves
For the first three marks we record the source URL, a verbatim quotation, and the date we retrieved it. That record is published on the brand's page, so you can check our work rather than take our word for it.
A claim we cannot source does not get a mark. Where a brand states something we have not been able to confirm independently, we say so and leave it unverified rather than rounding up.
Every verification is re-checked after twelve months. Manufacturing moves, and a stale mark is worse than no mark. When we get one wrong, we correct it in public. When a factory closes, we say so on the record rather than letting the mark go quietly out of date — see below.
When a mark is struck through
Some brands on this list stopped making things after we checked them. We do not delete those records and we do not quietly downgrade them: the mark they earned was true of the goods, and those goods are often still on a shelf somewhere. So the mark stays, struck through, with the month production ceased under it — and the brand's page opens with the date, the evidence and the source.
It means what it says and nothing more. A struck mark is not a judgement on the company or on what it made. It is the difference between "this is made here" and "this was".
