Vermont Teddy Bear started in 1981 and has made bears in Vermont ever since, today at its factory and flagship store in Shelburne. Since April 2024 it has belonged to the owners of the Vermont Flannel Company, which is listed separately on this site.
The company is unusually open about which of its bears are made where, and the answer is three different things under one name. The classic bears, the jointed 15-inch bears in outfits that make up most of the catalogue, are cut, sewn, stuffed and stitched in Shelburne. The larger Hunka Love bears and the Love to the rescue®, Oh So Soft and similar ranges are sewn abroad and only stuffed and finished in Vermont; the brand labels one of them “Assembled in Vermont from Parts Made Abroad”. Most of the outfits are made in China.
That is why the brand sits at the bottom mark and the handmade classics are recorded one mark higher. The Shelburne work on a classic bear is real: the fur is cut and sewn, joints and eyes set, and the bear stuffed by hand. But the product pages say the bears are made “using both imported materials from China”, and the fur is most of a teddy bear. The brand says elsewhere that many of its furs come from Wisconsin, but no product page says which bear uses which. If you want a bear made in Vermont, buy from the Classic range and look for “Handmade in Vermont” in the description, not “Stuffed with Love in Vermont”.
The record
Classic Vermont Teddy Bears are cut, sewn, stuffed and stitched in the United States
“They've always been cut, sewn, stuffed, and stitched in the USA (and always will be)! Since our beginnings in 1981 when Bearcho (the very first Vermont Teddy Bear) was just a baby, each and every classic Vermont Teddy Bear has been handmade right here in the USA.”

The fur on the handmade bears comes partly from the United States and partly from abroad
“Many of our furs come directly from Wisconsin, USA. To get the fine quality fur for our special-edition Mohair Bears, we look to Germany. And some of our other furs come from our friends in China.”
