Uncle Goose makes wooden alphabet and picture blocks in Grand Rapids, Michigan. William Bultman started it in 1983 after finding that nobody in the country still made the classic inch-and-three-quarter alphabet block. He began in the family garage. His son Pete now owns the company, which works out of a factory in a Grand Rapids industrial park.
The origin claim is broader than most. Uncle Goose says the wood, the ink and the packaging are all American, and that it uses no non-US materials or labor. The blocks are Great Lakes basswood, printed and embossed in the Michigan shop, and even the wagon wheels are turned in Maine. Every product page checked carries the same “100% made in the USA” line. A 2024 profile in The Lakeshore, a West Michigan publication, visited the factory, met the owner and staff, and confirms the Grand Rapids operation and the regional basswood.
The range runs from the Classic ABC set to around two dozen language sets, Braille sets, science and history themes, and maple planet “rollers”. All of it is made in the same shop.
