Springbar is the canvas tent Jack Kirkham Sr. designed in Salt Lake City in 1961. His canvas business, first the AAA Tent & Awning shop and later Kirkham’s Outdoor Products, had been cutting and sewing canvas in the city since 1944. The tents are still cut and sewn there, since 2019 in a workshop on South West Temple. A 2022 Outside magazine visit counted about twenty people on the sewing floor.
The catalogue has two lines, and Springbar labels them. The “Springbar USA” tents (Traveler, Vagabond, Compact, Outfitter, Family Camper, Ranger and Skyliner) carry “Cut & sewn in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA” on their product pages, and their spec tables place the other parts in the US too: poles machined in Salt Lake City, stake loops from Chicago, stakes from Missouri, zippers made in the USA. The canvas is dyed and finished in Georgia, but the pages don’t say where it is woven. That is why those tents are listed at the second mark rather than the first.
The “Springbar Imports” line (the Classic Jack tents, the Leisure Port and some accessories) is marked “Imported.” Outside reported that these models are made in China. Because the name covers both lines, the brand sits at the imported mark and only the Salt Lake City tents are listed below. Check the menu heading or the origin line before you buy.
