Smartwool

Smartwool is the brand people most often ask us about, usually expecting to be told it is not American-made. That turned out to be the wrong question, and we had it wrong ourselves before we checked.

Smartwool does claim domestic manufacture, on its own site: “our award-winning performance and activity socks continue to be designed, developed, tested and constructed right here in the USA,” alongside “while many socks sold in the U.S. are produced overseas, we’re proud to be part of the select group that manufactures right here in the USA.”

Three things keep this at the fourth mark rather than a higher one.

The claim is scoped. It covers “performance and activity socks” — not the catalogue. Nothing on the page says the rest of the range is domestic, and a scoped claim should not be read as a universal one.

The wool is not domestic, and Smartwool says so plainly: the merino is sourced from New Zealand. A sock knit in the United States from imported wool does not meet the FTC’s all-or-virtually-all standard, whatever else is true about it. On that basis alone the US-made lines would sit at the second mark, not the first.

And we have not independently confirmed which socks are made where. Third-party marketplace listings show large volumes of Smartwool product with Chinese and Vietnamese country-of-origin labels, which is consistent with a scoped claim but is not a source we can cite with confidence.

So: an American company, making a real and specific domestic claim about part of its range, using imported wool, with the split unverified. That is exactly what the fourth mark is for. It is not an accusation, and anyone telling you flatly that Smartwool is or is not American-made is going further than the evidence does.
