Olhausen Billiards makes pool tables, shuffleboards and game tables in a 250,000-square-foot factory in Portland, Tennessee, about 35 miles north of Nashville. Brothers Butch and Don Olhausen grew up setting up pool tables for their father in New Mexico. In 1973 they bought, for $1,000, a small San Diego company making about 35 tables a year. By 2006 they had outgrown a 140,000-square-foot plant in the San Diego area. They moved the whole operation to Tennessee and brought 65 of their California staff with them. The family still runs it, and the company says it now sells almost 30,000 tables a year through dealers.
Every product page says the tables are hand-crafted in the Portland plant and carries a “Made in the USA” line. The company names its hardwood as grown in the Northeastern US. The reason this record sits one mark below that claim is the slate. It is the playing surface itself, and Olhausen says only that it is “premium” and inspected at the factory, never where it is quarried. The natural gum rubber in the cushions is not grown in the United States either. The woodwork, finishing and assembly are American without question. The stone may not be, and until the company says otherwise the lower mark is the safe one.
Olhausen’s Amazon listings say it makes shuffleboards and other games in Portland as well, and its cue-rack pages say the racks are built in the same plant.
