Nylabone

Nylabone has been making chews in Neptune City, New Jersey since 1955, and it is the second brand in this category to publish the fact that its catalogue is split rather than let a shopper assume otherwise.

The disclosure is good. “All Nylabone chew treats are proudly made in the USA, and most Nylabone products are made in our facility here in Neptune City, New Jersey. A few of our products are made in China.” Three sentences, three different scopes, all stated plainly.

“A few of our products are made in China” is a plain statement that Nylabone sells imported goods under its own name, which is what puts the brand’s mark at the floor. The edible chew range, the one covered by an unqualified “all”, carries its own mark below and its own product page states it: “Proudly made in the United States.”

The gap is that the disclosure resolves at the shelf, not on the screen. Nylabone tells you the American-made items carry a flag on the package — genuinely useful if you are standing in a pet store, and no use at all if you are buying online, where no product page repeats it. It does not say which products the few are.

Buying online, the honest advice is the same one Nylabone gives: look for the flag when it arrives, and treat the rest of the range as unverified until it does. Nylabone is careful about the scope of its claims elsewhere too — its dental kit page says only “Toothpaste made in the USA”, which is a claim about one item in the box.
