Mayhew has made punches, chisels and pry bars in western Massachusetts since 1856. It began in Shelburne Falls as W.H. Maynard & Company and has been Mayhew Steel Products since 1915. The Lawless family has run it for generations and has owned all of it since the 1990s. Today it has two plants in Massachusetts, the main one in Turners Falls, and says it employs more than 300 people. The local paper photographed workers there in 2023 forging pry bars and running the heat-treat furnace.

Mayhew says most of its tools are made in the US and that the imported ones are there to fill out the range. Every product page has a “Country of Origin” field. The pry bars, punches, chisels, scrapers, picks and pneumatic tools checked all read US. The screwdriver bits read Taiwan, and the pliers and low-profile screwdrivers read Japan.

Because those imports are hand tools under the same name, the brand as a whole sits at the floor. The forged tools Mayhew is known for are recorded individually below at the top mark. Check the origin field on anything else.
