Harry Gerstner, a Dayton pattern-maker, built his first tool chest in his evenings and founded H. Gerstner & Sons in 1906 with a $100 apprenticeship bonus. After the Great Dayton Flood of 1913 the company built the factory it still works from. More than twenty American firms made wooden tool chests for journeymen in the early 1900s. Gerstner is the only one left, and it is still run by Harry Gerstner’s descendants.
The company now sells two lines under the Gerstner name, and it labels them honestly. The “Gerstner & Sons” chests (the 2610 Journeyman, the 2613 Pro-Series, the 2001 All Purpose Case and the rest of the “All USA Products” range) carry a country-of-origin line reading “Made in the USA at Gerstner & Sons Factory in Dayton, Ohio.” The “Gerstner International” chests, a cheaper range of similar-looking oak chests and rolling cabinets, are “Imported products made for Gerstner & Sons.”
That split sets the mark. The imported chests are the same kind of product, sold on Amazon under the same brand name and often without “International” in the title. So this page carries the floor, and the Dayton-made chests are listed below at the first mark on their own evidence. Before you buy, check the model number: the imported chests’ model numbers start with GI, and the Dayton chests’ do not (2610, 2613, 2001).
