Emerson Creek Pottery began in the early 1970s with two potters in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, who named it after the creek that ran past their house. In 1977 they took their wood-fired kiln apart, moved it to Bedford County, Virginia, and built a studio on the historic Wade family property. That studio is still at the centre of the works. One of those founding potters still owns and runs the company with his children.
Everything is made on that campus. The company mixes its own clay, glazes and slip, presses or slip-casts the forms, and hand-paints its floral patterns before firing. It also makes Brown Bag Designs shortbread pans and cookie stamps, a line it produced under contract for about 20 years before buying the company in 2015.
The mark is one below the top for one reason, and the company states it itself: the raw materials come from “the USA and Canada”. Every step of making happens in Virginia, but part of what goes into the clay does not come from the United States. If the company ever shows that the clay itself is domestic, the record should move up.
The record
All of the company's pottery is made start to finish at its Bedford, Virginia campus
“All of our pottery is made in the USA! We make each piece start to finish at our campus located in Bedford, Virginia.”

The company mixes its own clay and glazes from North American raw materials, some of them Canadian
“We source all of our raw materials from North American mines and material distributors. This means we know what we are receiving every time and can count on a strict quality control assurance. With these raw materials, we mix all of our own clays, glazes, and slip in-house using our own custom formulas developed through 45 years of experience.”
