Dr. Bronner’s blends and bottles its castile soaps at a 120,000-square-foot plant in Vista, California, a few miles from where Emanuel Bronner started mixing soap in a Los Angeles apartment in 1948.
The reason this sits at the second mark rather than the first is the ingredient list, not the factory. The oils that make the soap — coconut, palm kernel, olive — come through supply chains that begin outside the United States, and the company says so plainly, down to naming the two products it does not make here at all: the chocolate is Swiss and the virgin coconut oil is Sri Lankan.
That candor is the useful part. Most soap brands describe themselves as American-made and leave the inputs unmentioned; this one publishes a list of which products break the rule.
