Eppinger Manufacturing has made the Dardevle spoon since Lou Eppinger designed it in the early 1900s. The company dates the lure to 1906, and its history page says the finished lure was on sale by 1912. It is still a family business in Dearborn, Michigan, at 6340 Schaefer Road. Karen Eppinger, Lou’s great-niece, has led it since 1987, and her daughter Jennifer is now president. The range has grown from the red-and-white spoon to Red Eye Wigglers, Rex spoons, Cop-E-Cats and thousands of size and colour combinations.
The work happens in Dearborn. A writer who toured the factory, in an account published in 2026, describes pre-formed brass blanks arriving from a small Minnesota supplier. In Dearborn they are primed, painted by hand and fitted out, some on a 1938 riveting machine. Some parts are not accounted for. The Red Eye Wiggler’s glass eyes are Czech, and neither the brand nor the article says where the hooks and split rings are made. The record sits at the second mark for Dearborn-finished lures from US brass, with some imported and unstated parts.
