Channel Craft makes wooden toys, games and puzzles in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, on the Monongahela south of Pittsburgh. Dean Helfer Jr. started it in 1983 while still a student at West Virginia University, selling boomerangs, yo-yos and pickup sticks from a step van with a wood shop in the back. It moved to a shop in Ellsworth, Pennsylvania, and in 1991 to an old Army Corps of Engineers site in Charleroi. It now has three buildings there for manufacturing, assembly and distribution. The company sells mainly wholesale to museums, parks and gift shops.
The boomerang is the product the record is built on. The Observer-Reporter visited in 2023 and called Channel Craft the world’s largest maker of returning boomerangs. It photographed workers carving and packing them in the plant, and quoted Helfer saying the company takes birch sheet, poplar, cherry and maple and turns it into finished goods itself. Channel Craft’s Amazon listings say its boomerangs are “proudly crafted in the U.S.A.” Neither source says where the wood comes from.
One caution about the wider catalogue. The company also resells goods from partner makers, such as Roy Toy log-building sets, alongside its own. Only Channel Craft’s own boomerangs are listed here as products.

A regional newspaper visited the plant in 2023 and reports that Channel Craft makes its products itself from raw hardwood stock
“"We prime manufacture everything we do," Helfer said. "We take it from a sheet of birch wood or a piece of poplar or cherry or maple and turn it into these products. Almost everything we make gets shipped immediately."”
