John Bondhus invented the ball-end hex key, sold as the Balldriver, and began making it in 1964. The rounded tip lets the key enter a screw at up to 25 degrees off-axis. The company still makes its ball-end, hex and TORX L-wrenches, T-handles and fold-up sets in Monticello, Minnesota. The contractor that built one of its plant additions put output at more than 200,000 tools a day.
It is a split line, and Bondhus is open about it. Its 2026 catalogue carries “Made in the U.S.A.” on the L-wrench, T-handle and fold-up pages. It says on the cover that its screwdrivers, pages 64 to 88, are made in Germany, and it marks the HexPro pivot-head wrenches as made in Taiwan to Bondhus specifications. Both are sold as Bondhus tools, so the brand’s mark here is the floor and the Minnesota-made sets are carried below as per-product overrides.
The boundary is drawn more clearly than at most brands on this list: the imports are separate product lines with their own catalogue sections, not SKUs hidden inside the hex-key range. If you are buying a Bondhus screwdriver, it is a German one. If you are buying the hex keys the company is known for, they are made in Minnesota.

The building contractor that expanded the Monticello plant describes it as a working tool factory
“Bondhus Corporation needed more space to add an additional tool line and the associated support in their Monticello facility. With well over 200,000 tools going out the door each day, planning and logistics were key to the project.”
