Allen Edmonds has made shoes since 1922 and still runs its own factory in Port Washington, Wisconsin, north of Milwaukee. The Missouri footwear group Caleres has owned it since 2016. The Park Avenue cap-toe oxford, sold since 1982, is the shoe most people know it for. Port Washington also handles recrafting: resoling and refurbishing worn pairs, often more than once.

The honest description of the Wisconsin shoes comes from Allen Edmonds itself: “handcrafted in America from imported materials”, using leathers and soles “from the world’s top suppliers”. The lasting, welting and finishing happen in Port Washington, but the main materials come from abroad. That is the second mark, and it is what the Port Washington shoes below carry.

The rest of the catalogue is a different thing. Product pages carry an “Artisanship” line, and on some styles, such as the Oliver slip-on sneaker, it reads simply “Imported”. Caleres’s annual report adds a second company factory, in Santiago in the Dominican Republic, that also makes Allen Edmonds footwear. So the brand-level mark here is the floor, and the Wisconsin-made shoes are listed individually. Before you buy, check the “Artisanship” line on the product page. “Handcrafted in Port Washington, Wisconsin with imported materials” is the one you want.
